Higher Education Administration Overview

Note - this page is for students who began the M.Ed program prior to Fall 2019

Concentration Description

Higher education worldwide is experiencing constant and considerable pressure from evolving student demographics to financial strain on both institutions and students. This concentration examines this field through the roots of these pressures and prepares students for opportunities to effect change  and innovation in higher education policy, practice, teaching and learning, and services.

Most students in this concentration work within research universities, community colleges, state colleges and universities, liberal arts colleges, and higher education institutions and agencies across the US and throughout the world and hold a wide range of positions in administration, enrollment, admissions, financial aid, student life, consulting, information technology or other sectors both within and aligned with higher education.

Concentration Approach

Each course you take in the M.Ed. Program with a concentration in Higher Education Administration will feature at least one "Signature Assignment."  You will spot the Signature Assignment(s) in the syllabus for each course.  By the end of the Program you will have accumulated 10 or more Signature Assignments, and these will serve three important purposes:

First, each Signature Assignment is designed to give you an opportunity to use research literature, theories, and scholarly ideas you have gained and apply them to professional practice in higher education.  This focus on melding professional practice and scholarship is one of the distinctive features of our program.  You will be asked to store your Signature Assignments in an electronic portfolio, or ePortfolio.  Digication is the provider of the ePortfolio used by the College of Professional Studies for saving and editing your Signature Assignments.

Next, the Signature Assignments will be used in the final course in the Program – Capstone.  The Capstone course is constructed around the application of scholarship to professional practice, and in Capstone you will return to and use all of the Signature Assignments you have saved.

The third important purpose of the Signature Assignments is assessment.  In the Capstone course you will have the opportunity to demonstrate your achievement of the program competencies.  This is important, in that the program was designed around competencies needed for mastery and for professional advancement.
