I volunteer weekly with Science Club for Girls (SCFG). This organization provides free extracurricular classes in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) for girls in backgrounds underrepresented in STEM fields. These classes (or "science clubs") are taught by college mentors, assisted by high school aged junior mentors. I have worked with a class of girls since last year. Last year I and two other Northeastern undergraduates taught our 12 third grade girls chemistry. This semester, it's design. Each week we have lessons in age-approriate concepts and vocabulary. We facilitate discussions amongst the girls and encourage making and defending hypotheses and considering real world examples. Each week, our pre-made curriculum includes two or three hands on activities. Examples from last year's chemistry curriculum included making sorbet, crystals, and "rockets" (with baking soda and vinegar).  

 

I believe that one of my primary jobs as a scientist should be to encourage other scientists. The best science never comes as a result of one person working alone; only with a diverse community of minds can the problems of the future be solved. I hope to take all I learn thorugh this program with me throughout my career and always continue to inspire and encourage young scientists.
