Lessons and Accomplishments

When I transitioned into my role last August, I thought I would be working with students 1:1 through the application process as a college counselor. Without a supervisor up until two months ago, I did not have any guidance on my position and what I thought I was hired for did not match the expectations of the organization. I share this because I would not have been able to address my "problem of practice" if it wasn't for my new supervisor who has supported the re-development of my position. Due to the change in my position, I have been able to play a larger role in the organization which has empowered me to develop the modules present in this case and develop my skills as a facilitator and trainer.

The modules in this case are live modules which will be used this Summer, Spring and Fall and for years to come to train current and new advisors. The modules will be opened to changes and updates as the landscape of higher education continues to change as well as the needs of the organization. I have not only been able to incorporate the feedback from my peers in this program but also my colleagues in the work place.

Throughout this case study, I have struggled with the development and implementation of my business plan and partnerships with higher education institutions in Rhode Island. It has been difficult to benchmark different organizations since many like the College Crusade, do not have partnerships with institutions. Some organizations that I have reached out to have been limited in their responses or have not responded at all. However, I continue to find alternative ways to being this proposal a reality to the College Crusade in a year.

Overall, I have learned that I have the knowledge and leadership to implement real change in my organization. I have also learned that my experiences in admissions is a form of knowledge that the organization lacked before. By combining my passions to work with first-generation students and education, I can use my personal and professional background to increase access for students.
