I also created a unit on data collection and graphing. Below are two of the main components of the unit.

Survey Mornings.pdf

Below are the surveys that the class created collaboratively to make informed decisions such as what small construction should be, what books the class should read, and what types of breads the class should make.

Research Project.pdf

As part of the research project the students generated meaningful questions that they wanted to ask the whole school. The students were put into groups based on the questions they found the most interesting and then had to create a survey to find answers to the question they posed. Students surveyed as many classes in the school as they can and compiled their data. They worked collaboratively to create a graph to display their data and then write a letter to a person who could use the data to tell the results and what they could do with them.

Below are images of students working collaboratively with their groups to compile the data from their different surveys.

This is a group dividing up the tasks for the work that needs to get done. One student is using snap cubes as manipulatives to add the tally marks from the different surveys. Another uses manipulatives to count by 5's as he writes the scale for their graph while the third is labeling the axis.

Below a pair of students compiles data from the different classrooms onto one sheet before making their bar graph.

Below a groups of students consults their compiled data while making their bar graph.

Below are the final graphs made by each research group.

What type of bread do you like to eat?

What type of books do you like?

What park do you like to go to?

Where do you like to go on field trips?
