Israel mandates that most all of its citizens serve in the Israeli army upon completing high school. Some of the students have been going through a series of army preparation seminars to introduce them to the process.

I created a small reflection project for students to reflect in English about how they feel about their army service. I asked students from the 10th, 11th, and 12th grade classes to answer one of the following questions and hang their answers on the bulletin board in the hallway.

  1. How do you feel about going to the army?
  2. What do you think about teenagers in other countries who don’t have to go to the army?
  3. Do you agree or disagree that all Israelis must go to the army?
  4. What are you most excited about in the army?
  5. What are you least excited about in the army?
  6. What do you think you will be like after you serve in the army?
  7. What is your biggest anxiety about serving in the army?
  8. For girls: What do you think about being a female soldier in the army?
Students have been enjoying reading their classmate's answers and connecting with one another on their shared views. I feel it is so important for students to have outlets to express their views on their army service since it is such a huge part of these students futures and also a very huge obligation for young adults.
Below are samples of student responses.
