I worked with one of the English teachers in the 12th grade class to create their final "Bagrut" project. The Bagruts are exit exams taken in Israel over the last couple years of school before students go to the army. Some subjects, like English, have the option of doing research projects as an alternative to some sections of the English Bagrut.

The teacher had chosen the short story "Thank You, Ma'am" by Langston Hughes and wanted to create a Bagrut Alternative Bridging Context Project around this story. Another volunteer taught a lesson on the Harlem Renaissance as well as an overview of Black history in America,  a subject the students had very little prior knowledge of.

I created the guidelines for the research project that would also connect back to the Harlem Renaissance and the Langston Hughes story "Thank You Ma'am."

Project Guidelines:

Students chose topics like the Harlem Globetrotters, Jim Crow Laws, the Civil War, and jazz music. The students worked hard to do their research in English and then even harder to try to connect their topic of choice to the story "Thank You, Ma'am", Langston Hughes, and the Harlem Renaissance era.

Below are some student projects or sections of their projects that they have finished.
