Summary

She got a hedgehog. His name is Claudio.

Claudio the hedgehog is a small toy that sits on the corner of a shelf. He serves as a tangible reminder of intangible discoveries. In his idle state, the hedgehog is a reminder of self-doubt and ambition, apathy and determination, apprehension and confidence. Most importantly, he is a reminder of self-discovery and success.

This case study explores one learner’s journey of overcoming intrinsic and extrinsic challenges as she engages in a novel experience. Through an observation and an interview with the learner, insight is gained about the learning process and instructional design. This case investigated how a learner, who epitomizes academic success, is able to extend this habit beyond the classroom to extracurricular activities. Through this investigation, the ability to surpass contextual boundaries and transfer knowledge is examined.

As this story reveals, the learner and the experience demonstrates the complexities of how people learn. With the learner’s recently developed knowledge and skills, she departs the experience prepared for another. To remind her of everything she accomplished, she was given a small memento; Claudio the hedgehog.
