Studying in the US: A Guide for International Students

Overview

This MOOC is designed to support both undergraduate and graduate students coming to the US for college.  International students must not only adjust to a new academic environment, but an entirely new culture.  There are many resources available to international students, but it can be overwhelming to figure it all out.  This MOOC is designed to help students transition to life as a US student.  The first week will focus on American college culture and the transition to a new environment.  The second week will focus on academic expectations and how to succeed in your classes.

Goals and Outcomes

Learners will:

  • Express confidence in their ability to participate actively, find what they need, and take steps to ensure their safety at their school.
  • Be able to describe and adhere to academic norms and expectations in the US classroom.
  • Identify and be prepared to use resources available to international students on their campus.
  • Demonstrate intercultural competence by being able to identify differences between their cultures and broad patterns in American culture and discuss ways that they might reconcile those differences.
