The best practice I present here for Standard E aligns with Indicator 4 “Collaborates with colleagues to improve instruction, assessment, and student achievement” but might also be considered a kind of professional development (Indicator 6).  As part of the Achievement Network (ANet), the Tobin School regularly tests all grade 2-8 students with grade-appropriate standardized tests.  ANet then turns the results of these tests into student-specific achievement data.  A few days after each test, the faculty gathers to discuss test results and grade teams come up with plans to assess grade-wide strengths and creates re-teaching plans to remedy areas of weakness.  Though not required to attend these data meetings, I felt that it was extremely important to understand the achievement of my own students in relation to other students in the grade, the school, and the network of schools that ANet works with.  It was  inspiring to see assessment data turned into plans of action by my colleagues.  After this meeting, I was asked to create a quiz on number theory which we eventually used to assess our students' progress after the re-teach.  My meeting notes from the first ANet data meeting of the year are shown below.

A1 Data Meeting Notes

Ms. M - ELA Lead

Ms. J - Math Lead

Mr. H - Team Leader

Math data: 3rd grade and middle school exceded Network average.

Hone in on one area based on priority standards and student data

Prepare to take action: How & when will you re-teach?

At least one data action plan per/grade team -- turn in first to Ms. H now, 2nd by Fri

How to choose a math priority standard

1) is it a foundational skill?

2) is it heavily assessed? (see SAS -- those tested repeatedly)

3) Have I already taught it?

4) How did students perform on this standard?

ELA

Look at strengths AND weaknesses

See "distractor guide" - what were Ss thinking?

Areas to work on: Author's purpose, plus main idea and vocabulary

Auth. Purp Qs:

#6 "most likely" --> use ANet language in practice tests.  Inference, part, reading only part of sentence.

#8, #15 same

Re-assess on 11/10.  CM will generate quiz from MyANet site

Possible Author's Purpose according to ANet:

-Develop character

-Enhance plot

-Establish tone

-Clarify setting

-Introduce conflict

-Compare facts

Math

Grade 4: poor scores on Q 2, 8, 13, 11 -- mulitiplication/division, number theory

Division (& mult). 11/10 reasses.  AV will create quiz from MyAnet

Re-teach 10/27-11/9.  10-minute Math / Do Nows

11/15 - Reflection meeting

Prepare videos of reteaching?

Bring student work evidence.

Reinforcing Culture of Achievement

-You're in it as a team --> kids encourage each other based on ANet data

-Shout-outs at community mtg

-Ss should know which standards they are strong on vs. working on (individually and as a class)

CM will make copies of reteach planning sheet for all
