Summary

Multimedia courses present information to learners that can be processed through their visual and auditory senses. But have you ever heard of an online course that is designed to refine a student’s sense of smell? The Art of Botanical Perfume takes on this interesting challenge. Students learn about the history and alchemy of perfume, how to develop their own ability to distinguish and relate to various scents, and then experience creating their own botanical perfume.

This case study reviews a motivated, adult learner who is taking this open-ended course in order to gain knowledge and skills and earn a certificate in botanical perfume. Several important questions about how people learn surfaced during this review. For example, to be successful in an online course, are assignment deadlines and other structures necessary or is his motivation sufficient to complete the course? How important is a cohort to the user’s learning? Can effective metacognition occur without explicit prompting, feedback, or peer interaction?
